Step-by-Step: Dividing Fractions

Division looks scarier than it is. The trick has one name: keep, change, flip. Keep the first fraction exactly as it is. Change the division sign to multiplication. Flip (invert) the second fraction. Then multiply normally.

  1. Write down the problem. Say you have 5/6 divided by 2/3.
  2. Keep the first fraction. 5/6 stays as 5/6.
  3. Change division to multiplication. The sign becomes x.
  4. Flip the second fraction. 2/3 becomes 3/2.
  5. Multiply. (5 x 3) / (6 x 2) = 15/12.

Mixed Numbers and Improper Fractions

These two forms represent the same value and you can move between them freely.

Improper fraction to mixed number: Divide the numerator by the denominator. The quotient is the whole number part. The remainder goes over the original denominator. For 11/4: 11 divided by 4 is 2 remainder 3, so the mixed number is 2 and 3/4.

Mixed number to improper fraction: Multiply the whole number by the denominator, then add the numerator. That total becomes the new numerator; the denominator stays the same. For 3 and 2/5: (3 x 5) + 2 = 17, so the improper fraction is 17/5.
